We Canât Stop Whatâs Coming
Steve Cole
âThe whole planet is riddled with time distortion!â The Doctor said so with a thrill of a grin, as if this were the highest praise. âNo wonder the TARDIS was drawn here.â
I sighed. âSo we have to go out and investigate, do we?â
âAh, Fitz. Course we do!â He looked at me, and as usual I found myself thinking how stony-cold his eyes were, despite the twinkle and the air of the poet. âI mean, really, leave this place, without knowing what was going on? How could I live with myself?â
âHow do any of us manage to live with yourself?â Trix teased, feet up in an armchair across the control room. âHint. We pretend youâre just our cab driver. Youâll stop talking if we give you nothing to go on.â
The Doctor beamed at her. âAre you coming out, then?â
âNope,â Trix said.
âIâll come,â I said. âJust so you can do your thing, yeah?â
âReadings. Samples. Quick trans-temporal biopsy.â The Doctor smiled, smoothed out the tails of his dark green coat and dusted down his waistcoat. âWeâll be back before Trix even realises weâre gone.â He threw the lever that opened the TARDIS doors. âAfter me, Fitz?â
âObviously,â I said.
The Doctor led the way outside onto your basic blasted heath. Sort of a Clapham-Common-after-solar-flares type vibe. I closed the doors to our magic police box.
âYes! Yes, yes, yes.â The Doctor was waving some weird instrument around the rocks and the stunted trees. âThis environment is definitely at odds with the rest of the planetoid.â
âYou mean the rest of the planetoid isnât rubbish,â I suggested.
âThis environment around us, itâs from a different geological period. Everythingâs different.â He licked a finger and held it up to a breeze I couldnât feel. âItâs been picked up from somewhere else and just dumped here.â
âLike me.â
The Doctor blew me a kiss and looked back at his gadget. âYeah, Iâd say that a limited area, maybe two miles square, was scooped out of one planet maybe 10,000 years ago and transplanted here in the relative present.â
I walked over to join him. âSomeoneâs got a big old bucket and spade.â
âTime-scooped, Iâd say. Thing is, thereâs a ban on that kind of technology.â The Doctor sighed. âOr there used to be, anywayââ
Next second this big hairy Neanderthal jumped down from nowhere (or possibly a ledge) and started screaming and hooting in our faces. Grey skin, wild hair, big dark eyes and bigger bright fangs.
I swore and pegged it back to the TARDIS. âCome on, Doctor!â
Another one jumped out from behind the police box with a shriek and showed me the wooden club it was holding. I got a really good look.
WHACK! Right between the eyes.
