We Can’t Stop What’s Coming

Steve Cole

‘The whole planet is riddled with time distortion!’ The Doctor said so with a thrill of a grin, as if this were the highest praise. ‘No wonder the TARDIS was drawn here.’

I sighed. ‘So we have to go out and investigate, do we?’

‘Ah, Fitz. Course we do!’ He looked at me, and as usual I found myself thinking how stony-cold his eyes were, despite the twinkle and the air of the poet. ‘I mean, really, leave this place, without knowing what was going on? How could I live with myself?’

‘How do any of us manage to live with yourself?’ Trix teased, feet up in an armchair across the control room. ‘Hint. We pretend you’re just our cab driver. You’ll stop talking if we give you nothing to go on.’

The Doctor beamed at her. ‘Are you coming out, then?’

‘Nope,’ Trix said.

‘I’ll come,’ I said. ‘Just so you can do your thing, yeah?’

‘Readings. Samples. Quick trans-temporal biopsy.’ The Doctor smiled, smoothed out the tails of his dark green coat and dusted down his waistcoat. ‘We’ll be back before Trix even realises we’re gone.’ He threw the lever that opened the TARDIS doors. ‘After me, Fitz?’

‘Obviously,’ I said.

The Doctor led the way outside onto your basic blasted heath. Sort of a Clapham-Common-after-solar-flares type vibe. I closed the doors to our magic police box.

‘Yes! Yes, yes, yes.’ The Doctor was waving some weird instrument around the rocks and the stunted trees. ‘This environment is definitely at odds with the rest of the planetoid.’

‘You mean the rest of the planetoid isn’t rubbish,’ I suggested.

‘This environment around us, it’s from a different geological period. Everything’s different.’ He licked a finger and held it up to a breeze I couldn’t feel. ‘It’s been picked up from somewhere else and just dumped here.’

‘Like me.’

The Doctor blew me a kiss and looked back at his gadget. ‘Yeah, I’d say that a limited area, maybe two miles square, was scooped out of one planet maybe 10,000 years ago and transplanted here in the relative present.’

I walked over to join him. ‘Someone’s got a big old bucket and spade.’

‘Time-scooped, I’d say. Thing is, there’s a ban on that kind of technology.’ The Doctor sighed. ‘Or there used to be, anyway—’

Next second this big hairy Neanderthal jumped down from nowhere (or possibly a ledge) and started screaming and hooting in our faces. Grey skin, wild hair, big dark eyes and bigger bright fangs.

I swore and pegged it back to the TARDIS. ‘Come on, Doctor!’

Another one jumped out from behind the police box with a shriek and showed me the wooden club it was holding. I got a really good look.

WHACK! Right between the eyes.
